Which nutrient deficiency causes hair loss?

At first it sounds like simple math: your hair is falling out, your body is missing something - so iron, zinc, or vitamins might be the answer. The connection isn’t that clear-cut, though.

Certain nutrient deficiencies can contribute to hair loss1. But not every "hair vitamin" mentioned in health guides or on social media carries the same scientific weight. And one more thing matters: even a good nutrient supply is no guarantee against hair loss, because the causes often lie elsewhere. That makes it worth taking a closer look.

Which deficiencies can play a role in hair loss?

Our hair follicles are biologically highly active structures. The cells at the hair root in particular divide quickly, and that takes energy, protein, and a range of micronutrients. So when certain nutrients are missing over a longer period, hair can show it. How much a deficiency actually matters, though, varies from nutrient to nutrient. Here is an overview.

Iron deficiency and hair loss.

Iron is one of the nutrients most often studied when it comes to deficiencies and hair loss. Among other things, this trace element is needed to form hemoglobin, and therefore to carry oxygen through the body.

In diffuse hair loss especially, a possible iron deficiency is considered an important factor. Whether one is actually present cannot be determined from the appearance of the hair alone, however; it has to be confirmed by a medical evaluation2.

Vitamin C deficiency and hair loss.

Vitamin C can matter indirectly for how well the hair is supplied with nutrients: it helps the body absorb iron from plant-based foods more effectively. So if you take in little iron, or already have an iron deficiency, it is worth keeping an eye on your vitamin C intake as well3. A pronounced vitamin C deficiency can also cause changes in the skin and hair. It does not follow, though, that a deficiency is a typical cause of ordinary hair loss.

Zinc deficiency and hair loss.

Zinc is involved in numerous processes in the body, including cell division and protein synthesis. With a pronounced zinc deficiency, hair loss can occur as well4.

But more zinc does not automatically mean more hair growth. Supplementing makes sense mainly when a deficiency is actually there.

Vitamin D deficiency and hair loss.

Researchers have been looking closely at the link between vitamin D and hair loss for several years now. Studies have repeatedly found lower vitamin D levels in people with alopecia areata5. There is an important scientific distinction to keep in mind here: just because two things occur together does not mean one automatically causes the other. So there is no blanket answer to whether a vitamin D deficiency actually triggered the hair loss, or whether supplementing can influence hair growth. Vitamin K deficiency and hair loss.

Vitamin K also comes up again and again in discussions of what causes hair loss. So far, though, there is little hard scientific evidence behind it. What is clear is that vitamin K performs important jobs in the body, including in blood clotting and bone metabolism. But the idea that a deficiency also triggers hair loss is not sufficiently supported by science.

Vitamin B12 deficiency and hair loss.

Vitamin B12 handles vital tasks in our body: it plays a part in blood formation, in the nervous system, and in cell division. Since new cells are constantly forming in the hair follicle as well, it is a natural thought that B12 also plays a role in hair growth6. The research, though, paints a less consistent picture than that biological logic might suggest: some studies find lower B12 levels in people with diffuse hair loss, while other comparative studies show no difference from healthy control groups. As things stand, that is not enough to support taking B12 across the board for hair loss.

Omega-3 deficiency and hair loss.

Omega-3 fatty acids are part of a balanced nutrient supply as well. Some of these fatty acids are essential: the body cannot make them itself and depends on getting them from food. A marked, longer-term lack of essential fatty acids does show in the skin and hair, up to and including hair loss7. The reverse does not hold, though—hair loss is by no means a sign that you are short on omega-3. And reaching for high-dose omega-3 supplements will not turn thin hair into a full head of hair. So far, the scientific basis for that is simply not there.

More nutrients, more hair? Unfortunately, it's not that simple.

One thought suggests itself here: if nutrient deficiencies can cause hair loss, then topping up should at least be a sensible precaution. It is not quite that simple.

Dietary supplements can be useful when there is a genuine need8. Without a diagnosed deficiency, however, there is not enough evidence for many micronutrients to show that extra amounts improve hair growth.

With some nutrients, taking in too much can even have unwanted effects. What matters, then, is not treating a suspected deficiency but first establishing whether one exists at all. With persistent or pronounced hair loss, the search for causes should therefore always be guided by a medical professional.

Who can be affected by a vitamin or mineral deficiency?

A nutrient deficiency can occur at any age and regardless of sex. Diet, medical conditions, medications, stage of life, and individual needs all shape how well supplied the body is, and they do so differently in every person.

  • In women, for example, iron status is of particular interest, since the monthly cycle can increase iron loss. Pregnancy and breastfeeding change nutrient needs as well. Even so, anyone looking to stop hair loss in women should not automatically assume a vitamin deficiency is the cause. Hormonal and genetic factors are possibilities too.

  • Hair loss in children caused by a vitamin deficiency is possible as well. With children in particular, hair loss or the appearance of bald patches should always be evaluated by a doctor, since many other causes can be behind it10.

How do you find out whether a deficiency is really present?

The hair itself cannot tell you which nutrient might be missing.

Fatigue, pale skin, brittle nails, or other symptoms can point to certain deficiencies, but they are rarely conclusive. That is why an evaluation sensibly starts with the whole picture. What does your diet look like? Are there any pre-existing conditions? Are you taking medications? How long has the hair loss been going on, and what form does it take?

If that raises the suspicion of a nutrient deficiency, blood tests ordered by your doctor provide further clues. This matters because supplementing on a hunch does not reliably identify an existing deficiency and may well miss the real cause of the hair loss.

A balanced diet for healthy hair.

A balanced diet cannot change a genetic predisposition to hair loss. What it does do is create the conditions for the body to have the nutrients it needs.

That means enough protein, along with foods rich in iron, zinc, and vitamins. Legumes, whole grains, vegetables, fruit, nuts, and seeds can all be part of it, as can eggs, dairy, fish, or meat, depending on how you eat. Vitamin C pairs well with plant-based sources of iron, for instance. Omega-3 fatty acids are found in oily sea fish, as well as in walnuts, flaxseed, and chia seeds.

Very restrictive diets, on the other hand, can be a problem. Sharp calorie restriction, rapid weight loss, or too little protein can affect the hair cycle and contribute to hair loss11.

So if you want to encourage hair growth beyond what diet can do, it is worth looking past individual vitamins and seeing hair growth as the complex biological process it is.

And what if there is no deficiency at all?

Hair loss can have many causes. Besides nutrient deficiencies, the possibilities include genetic predisposition, hormonal changes, illness, medications, significant physical strain, and stress. Androgenetic hair loss—the hereditary kind—is especially common. Here the cause is not a shortfall of vitamins. Instead, genetically sensitive hair follicles respond to particular hormonal signals. Over time, growth phases can shorten and the hair that grows back can become progressively finer.
